Austrian Three Peaks Challenge
Trek Adventure
A classic mountain challenge with a twist - you’ll have three days to summit three mountains in the Austrian Alps.
Day One
Arrive into Salzburg Airport and take a private transfer or easy public transport to our base during the challenge, St Gilgen. Upon arrival you’ll have time to explore the stunning Austrian town and admire the peak-surrounded lake. In the evening, we’ll meet at a popular restaurant for dinner, to meet the leader team, and to listen to the event briefing.
Day Two
We’ll step out the front door of the hotel to begin our first day. We’ll walk north out of town and up into the dense coniferous woodland. We’ll follow woodland tracks, rivers, and narrow footpaths until we emerge at the summit of Plomberg at 1102m high. From here we’ll stop at the stunning Eibensee lake, then wind our way back down into town.
Day Three
Our longest day of the challenge. Once out of town we’ll ascend the impressive peak of Schafbergspitze at 1783m high. This summit has a train station and a café, so we’ll stop for a coffee to fuel us for our descent down to the vast Wolfgangsee, which we’ll skirt round until we’re back in St Gilgen.
Day Four
Our final peak of Zwolferhorn, towering at 1521m, awaits. South from town, we’ll walk up through the woods, stopping irregularly to admire the lake views. We’ll stop at the summit for a coffee and snack, then continue along the wide ridgeline south. After 1km, we’ll turn west and make our way down an alpine meadow valley and back into town for a celebratory meal.
Day Five
We’ll have a brief morning to explore the town once more, then transfer back to the airport.
What is a Level 4.0 Trekking Challenge Like?
You are now moving into the realms of serious challenges - where you are likely to encounter rough and steep terrain, sleep deprivation – ie very long days, or even high altitude. In any case - be prepared for an event which is going to take you well past the limits of your comfort zone. Trekking days will be up to 13 hours, or slightly less if the event stretches over several days. The severity of the challenge may be magnified by various factors - and you will need to be more resilient - variable weather conditions, simple food and maybe camping – these factors forms a part of the challenge. You need to be in good shape to undertake any of these events, and you need to be training regularly. The height gain each day is greater than for level 3 - so expect plenty of hills! A level 4 challenge would involve a very long day (in excess of 28 miles) or some serious hill climbing (multiple peaks in one day) - or possibly both!
How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 4.0 ‘Trek’?
To participate in these events you need to be in very good fitness. You enjoy taking exercise, and do it regularly (a couple of times a week minimum). You may well partake in several different types of activity, possibly including the gym, swimming, running, or circuit training. You probably are capable of running up to 5 or 6 miles, but in a good steady speed (around 9-10 minute miling). If you do not run - you should be regularly undertaking challenging walks or other strenuous exercise. You should be comfortable walking 17-19 miles in the English lowland countryside.
