3 Peaks Test Day Surrey Hills

Trek Adventure

Join Adventure Cafe for the training event for the big 3 peaks! The 3 peaks challenge is one of the most popular challenges in the UK and takes in Britain's highest peaks in 24hrs. Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales. This is a tough one day trek to prepare you for the main challenge ahead.

You have very sensibly opted to gauge your fitness levels in advance of your 3 Peaks Challenge Event. This single day of training and fitness assessment is designed, in a convenient location, to put you through your paces, and to see how you measure up to the challenge of the 3 Peaks. We shall be meeting in Shalford with the option for coffee/pastry, and tackling multiple steep undulations, that will get your heart beating, and your pulse racing. But most importantly, will allow you to benchmark against a reasonable pace, and some measured climbs. Rather than going into the 3 Peaks ‘blind’, this day will give you some idea of what lies ahead, the level of physical intensity, and fitness required. We have built in a rest point at Gomshall at 12.5km and Westhumble at 26.5km with the option to hop on a train if required at these points. We then take on a final loop of Box hill to finish back up at Boxhill & Westhumble station with the option for dinner before you depart. Your target trek time is 8.5hrs!

Itinerary

Meet at 09:00 - The Snooty Fox, Shalford
Walk approximately 32km (including ascent of approximately 1048m (just 284m less than the ascent required for Ben Nevis).

Within the walk, at least two timed, measured sections, on specific ascents of 100m or more. This will give us a good indication on your fitness levels, and will form the majority of our fitness assessment, in conjunction with your overall speed for the walk. The walk is expected to last approximately 8.5 hours. This is walking at a fast pace (5kmph), and not stopping for many breaks. Your leader will encourage you to walk at an appropriate speed which will give you an indication of what you need to maintain on the 3 Peaks.
We expect to complete our walk back into Westhumble by 17:30 to stay on for dinner or return journey home.

Route Map

What is a Level 3.0 Trekking Challenge Like?

These challenges are either longer, higher, or span several days. In the case of single day events, you can expect up to 9 hours trekking. In the case of a multi day trek, you can expect a lower daily duration, but of course the effort is sustained over a longer period. You need to be keen on physical exercise for these events, and to enjoy taking exercise, and do it regularly. Longer duration long haul treks are likely to be easier in terms of the physical walking, however you will need to be more resilient, due to simple living conditions. UK single day or weekend level 3 treks are suited to walkers and trekkers with some previous history of upland walking or alternatively a good amount of lowland training behind them.

How Fit Do I need to be to join a Level 3.0 ‘Trek’?

You need to have good endurance for these events. You must be used to doing very long walks in the countryside; 7 hours plus . You should be doing regular exercise, possibly with some running. Your running speed will be fairly steady; nothing too fast, and you should be able to run a minimum of 4 miles. If you do not run, you should be concentrating on other types of exercise but for longer periods of time (i.e. sessions in excess of 1.5 hrs). These other forms of exercise should be at a moderate to high level. e.g. spinning, circuits, swimming, or other sports.

Medical Issues

Please note, it is extremely important for this physical challenge that you are in good health. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please consider carefully whether you should be joining the challenge. Please ensure you fill in the booking form accurately and honestly, this is important. In the case of serious conditions (epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions, recent illness or operations), please discuss the challenge with your GP. Please also ensure you notify us of any allergies or similar.

You should be used to walking reasonable distances each day to contemplate this trek. It requires stamina and good aerobic fitness - but good willpower will also come in handy! Failure to disclose medical conditions is a serious omission - that could have serious repercussions on any of our challenges.
